There isn't a continuous influx of new DM players on octgn. Like we had back in KP. Heck, even TCO keeps getting new players.
I believe that new players get comfortable with TCO so quickly because it has the TCG format. They play a lot of TCG - it's got lesser cards, so it's more familiar and easy to get into.
They see OCG being played, and get interested in that too(sometimes).
This is just a proposal for now- We can rev up the same OCG plugin to support multiple formats.
I'm talking set 12 format(Almost TCG), set 17 format, set 22 format, et cetera. Each new set block/saga has its own format. However...
It'll be up to us to decide what formats would be the best to keep. Ideally the number should be as low as possible, around 3 or 4 formats, the best ones.
Each with its own ban list according to the timeline(we could mess with those a bit to keep the gameplay as balanced as possible).
What I hope to achieve with this is making a ladder of sorts, that new players can climb. A step-by-step introduction to newer sets.
They can start with the Set 12 format, then after a while try their hand at the next one, and so on. Ofc they can play the lesser formats whenever they want. Like how some people on TCO play both TCG and OCG according to whoever they find in the lobby, lol.
And this would also preserve well-loved formats that are lost for ever when new sets are added. *tears*
(Okay, not that severely, but you get the point.)
This is possible by players doing it themselves, but I'd strongly recommend some explicit support.
I posted this once before, but here are the some points that just might do the trick:
- First and foremost, the deck editor. An extra parameter to search by format.
For example, if you select "Set 12 format" only the cards available to use in that format would show.
- Second, the banlists.
In the game documents menu, having a banlist for each format, according to the JP banlist during the set's time.
Each format can be made more balanced by selecting a time AFTER that set in the time line, and/or some manual tweaks.
- Third, optionally, the forums.
We can have various sections for each format here.
Something along the lines of what DZ and KC had, with "Beginner arena", "Intermediate arena" and all that.
Just gotta rename them as the format arena instead.
We could even have tournaments and all for each format after that!
Now uh, I'm not saying this without knowing about the amount of work this would require on the developers' part, but if people DO accept this thing...then I'll be helping with the development too, if we get around to it.
EDIT: Just found out the "Limited Game" option. Exploring it.
EDIT2: Never mind. It allows only the sealed game feature for now, not what we need. In can be used to the separation of formats in some way after more development, but that's in the hands of the OCTGN devs, not the plugin makers.

Thoughts?
Would you WANT this? Or is it too much of a hassle, with various formats and all?
